The main difference is the room
At a karaoke bar, singers usually submit songs to a host and perform in a shared public space. At private karaoke, one invited group books a room and manages its own song queue. Both can be excellent nights out, but the rhythm and audience are different.
A public night brings the energy of a crowd and the surprise of hearing strangers sing. A private room gives your group more control over pace, song choices, and who is in the audience.
When a private room works well
Private rooms are useful when the group itself is the occasion: a birthday, a reunion, a date, a wedding-weekend gathering, or a team outing. The room keeps everyone together rather than scattering the group around a busy venue.
They can also be more approachable for first-time singers. There is no need to wait for your name to be called in front of a room of strangers, and quieter members of the group can participate at their own pace.

- The celebration should stay centered on your group.
When an open karaoke night works well
A public karaoke bar is a better match when meeting new people and watching a broad mix of performers are part of the appeal. It can be spontaneous, and there is often no room reservation to organize.
The tradeoff is that wait times depend on the crowd and host queue. Your group may sing fewer songs, and the audience is public. Neither format is universally better; they serve different kinds of nights.
